"Lincoln County Crucible" is the third in the Valediction for Revenge series about Jethro Spring, a man born of an Indian mother and a mountain man father, one who passes through red and white worlds without feeling at ease in either.

"Lincoln County Crucible" is set amid the bloody Lincoln County War in southeastern New Mexico, taking place after the terrible gun battle where Alexander McSween and many of his partisans died.

"Lincoln County Crucible" opens with the Santa Fe Ring in neat-total control of southeastern New Mexico. Young Jethro is undecided about remining or riding into the sunset.
