General care:
The fabric is treated treated for water repellency with Sunforger™ Marine finish, so you do not need to treat it with any type of waterproofing. The tent is also treated for flame retardency. You may want to set it up and let it get wet once before you use it –this is kind of a seasoning process. If it doesn’t rain, put it under a lawn sprinkler or spray it with a hose. Always make sure any canvas product is dried thoroughly before you store it away. NEVER use a detergent on it – it is likely to remove the treatment. If you do see some needle-hole leakage, simply rub the butt end of a paraffin candle on the area; this should take care of it. We use a non-wicking thread, but as you know this is not a perfect world.
Staking:
There are 12 stake loops around the perimeter of the tent and 12 ropes, so you would in theory need 24 stakes. However, you can tie ropes out to available brush, logs, etc. so you do not always need to use stakes on the guy lines. In the winter time, the black snow flap/sod cloth is turned outward and snow is shoveled on it to anchor the tent- so floor stakes are not needed if there is snow.
Set-up:
Setting up is relatively simple. The frame goes together in a saw horse type configuration with 2 welded aluminum spiders as a union for the ridge pole and the 4 legs. There are four grommeted tabs in the corners of the tent. The tip on the end of each of the leg poles is placed into the grommet – two grommets in each corner allow for some minor length adjustment if the ground is uneven, tent is wet, etc. The spiders have a slightly loose fit when the frame is put together. This allows for slight movement in many directions, which allows the tent frame to conform to the irregularities of the ground.
Then along the 4 sides on the outside there are grommeted tabs in the base and at the eve line. The small picket poles are placed in these locations, both ends in grommets to hold the wall upright. The tent is tied out with ropes from the brass rings on the eves. The four corners should be at 45 degree angles. There are also two tie-out points on the back wall and two on the front wall expand them out. Tension all ropes firmly but do not over-tighten.
