I was well into my adult life when I discovered just how great a pair of shotgun chaps felt on a frosty morning. Not only do my shotgun chaps keep me warm, but they also make great rain gear.  If treated with chap wax at least once a year, good leather can rival Gore-Tex for water repellency and breathability.
Up here in Montana, the full leg protection of shotgun chaps is definitely a benefit in those storms where the rain or snow is coming at you from all directions. Shotgun chaps also offer excellent protection from thick brush, branches and thorns. These chaps will protect your legs from injury and your jeans from tears and damage. While I don't do it, I know people who wear shotgun chaps in the summer, so that they get full leg protection while wearing shorts, lightweight hiking pants or even English breeches.
All these features are great, but the thing I love most about my shotguns is that when I take them off after a dusty day on the trail, my jeans are still clean!
